Football Transfer News: Chelsea’s Mikel Might Follow Lampard and Play for MLS

John Obi Mikel, more famously known as just Mikel, has said that he might move to the American soccer league, Major League Soccer, after his contract with Chelsea expires, if it means he can once again play with, or against, former Chelsea teammate, Frank Lampard.

The 29-year-old Mikel, has long been a member of Chelsea, since joining the club in 2006, and has formed a special bond with all of the players, especially Frank Lampard. With Mikel's contract with Chelsea almost up, he says that he just might follow in his old teammate's footsteps and play overseas in the United States.

Chelsea is yet to renew Mikel's contract for the new year, and by the time that January comes and they still do not come to an agreement, the Nigerian international will look for other clubs to play for. In an interview with GOAL, Mikel discussed his future options if he will not stay in Stamford Bridge, saying that if there is no negotiation with Chelsea, he will look for a club that would deem best for him and his family.

Mikel also says that Major League Soccer would be an option one day, after seeing Lampard's success there. Currently in Stamford Bridge, Mikel is having a hard time finding his own success, admitting that it will be tough for him to start for Chelsea, as he missed much of the pre-season with the club to his commitments to his national team.

According to Fox Sports, the Chelsea mid-fielder says that club manager, Antonio Conte, has his own philosophy on how he wants his players to perform on the pitch, and it would take some time before he can have his starting position back.

Mikel is currently the second longest active player on the Chelsea roster, behind team captain, John Terry. In his 10 year stay with, Chelsea had amassed numerous awards including 2 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups, 2 League Cups, and 1 Champions League trophy, among others.
