Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and founder is all set to unveil Tesla and SolarCity's new solar roof product on October 28 in the SF Bay area. The new solar roof product will be directly integrated with version 2.0 of the Tesla's PowerWall solar storage battery for the home, as well as Tesla car charger.
Musk took it Twitter on Thursday to tease a SolarCity solar panel roof, new PowerWall battery and Tesla car charger. Though Musk has announced the date of October 28, it is possible for him to cross the deadline as he has done such announcements before. Tesla Motors CEO teased the first full-scale look at version 2.0 of the Powerball at an event in Paris earlier this year.
Earlier, Tesla's PowerWall only worked with SolarEdge inverters. Customers who wanted to but a battery had to purchase the inverter as well. According to Tech Radar, the SMA inverter currently costs $1,240, while one from SolarEdge costs $2,944.
In its financial update for the first quarter of 2016, Tesla confirmed it had shipped 25 megawatt-hours of storage capacity in the first three months of the year.
"We delivered over 2,500 Powerwalls and nearly 100 Powerpacks in the quarter throughout North America, Asia, Europe and Africa," the company said in a shareholder letter.
Rumors suggest that the SolarCity roof will be more subtle than the traditional solar panels placed on houses. According to Electrek, Tesla Motors CEO told investors last month, "It's a solar roof, as opposed to modules on a roof."
According to Green Tech Media, the updated PowerWall will expand compatibility requirements, making it easier and cheaper to be installed at homes. Stay tuned for more updates on Green Technology.
