Snap, Inc. Chief Executive Evan Spiegel has revealed the company's newest technology called Spectacles, a video recording sunglasses equipped with cameras, along with his announcement to change the company's name. The social media app will apparently remain as Snapchat but the company will now be referred to as Snap, Inc.
Spiegel discussed in a blog post that they named the company Snapchat Inc. as Snapchat was its only product back then. However, now that the company will be working on more products, including its new technology Spectacles, it makes sense to change its name to a new signature that would still represent the familiarity and fun of their company. "We decided to drop the 'chat' and go with Snap Inc!," Spiegel said in the blog post.
The Snapchat CEO also said that its name change could bring benefits to users in terms of ease in searching for Snap Inc. products. He explained that Snapchat users can easily search for the app or Spectacles and get more relevant results without having to go through other company information that may not interest the reader.
Meanwhile, Snapchat Spectacles, according to Spiegel, was built to let users remember their most favorite memories the way they have experienced them. Snap Inc. CEO said that they have seamlessly integrated "one of the smallest wireless video cameras in the world" in the Spectacles sunglasses. The camera has the capacity to hold a number of Snaps in one whole day with just a "single charge," reportedly.
Spectacles by Snap Inc. is said to be available in three colors. Users can reportedly transfer Memories captured by Spectacles directly to Snapchat through Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connection. Spiegel also noted that Snapchat has "a brand new circular video format" which could apparently play in fullscreen on any given device and in any orientation.
Snapchat Spectacles is expected to be available in the United States in the fall. The price point of the device is reportedly at $130, ABC 11 reported.
