Superstar Carmelo Anthony of the New York Knicks questions the Cleveland Cavaliers management team, after hearing that his former teammate, J.R. Smith, has not yet been signed by the club that he helped win a championship.
Carmelo Anthony is one of the deadliest scorers in the NBA, and is one of their most tenured stars. It's safe to say that Anthony knows how it works behind the scenes, in the offices beyond the courts of the league, which is why the Knicks' star-forward wonders why the Cavaliers haven't given J.R. Smith a contract, so close to the opening of the NBA regular season.
Talking to the New York Post, Anthony says that he doesn't really know what the Cavaliers are planning with Smith, that they should have signed him immediately after his efforts in helping Cleveland win their first NBA title. Anthony added that Smith was a major part of the Cavaliers team, and if they don't sign him, they could see their prized shooting guard go elsewhere.
Smith, who arguably brought the Cavaliers back to life in Game 7 of the finals, after hitting back to back three pointers, when the Cavs were trailing by 9 in the fourth quarter, is still negotiating a contract with the Cavaliers.
Anthony would love to welcome his old teammate back to New York, if Smith does indeed decide to transfer before the regular season begins, but the Knicks don't have much to offer the 31-year-old guard, as they have already maxed their salary cap over the summer, and Smith is looking for a big contract, according to Sportsrageous.
The Knicks will face the Cavaliers in Cleveland in their opening game of the season, on a night where the Cavaliers will be presented their NBA Championship rings. Anthony says that he wants to give something special to LeBron James and his team in their first matchup of the year.
