"God Of War" 4 from Sony Santa Monica and creative director Cory Barlog peppered the "GoW" E3 demo with Easter eggs. Will Sony and Cory Barlog let Kratos wear Hermes' boots and inherit the Greek god's speed in "God Of War" 4?
In "God Of War" 3, which Sony Santa Monica gave a Greek mythology setting, Kratos defeated Hermes. As is Kratos' habit in the "God Of War" games, the "GoW" protagonist took opponent Hermes' boots - credited as the deity's source of speed - as memento.
When asked on Twitter if "God Of War" 4 players can use Hermes' boots, Cory Barlog confirmed that these were only added as "GoW" Easter eggs and are not actually functional in Kratos' new game. This makes sense as Cory Barlog highlighted that "God Of War" 4 is an intentional relocation of Kratos from Greek to Norse mythology.
Kratos is supposed to be the bridge between "God Of War" in the old mythologies and the Norse mythology. The removal of number 4 from the new "God Of War" title was just as intentional as the new Kratos chapter in the Norse mythology is not supposed to be a sequel of the earlier "GoW" games but a restart.
Fitting then that Kratos will not be seen in Greek god Hermes' boots from "God Of War" 3. Just as telling is Kratos' switch from his trademark Blades Of Chaos to a new ax as part of the new combat system in "God Of War" 4.
Engadget cites an interview with Cory Barlog to highlight that "God Of War 4" may not be a sequel but the new "GoW" from Sony Santa Monica is anything but a reboot. Cory Barlog pointed out that "God Of War" 4 will not erase the fate that befell Kratos in the previous "GoW" iterations, but the "GoW" protagonist will have reached a new phase in his existence.
"God Of War" 4 from Sony Santa Monica and Cory Barlog may see a release date somewhere in late 2017 at the earliest. "God Of War" 4 is set to be an exclusive title for PlayStation 4.
