As the comedy series "The Mindy Project" releases its fifth season on Hulu on Tuesday, Oct. 4, its star Mindy Kaling has become entangled in a family controversy that is really no laughing matter. The actress- writer's brother has called out his big shot sister for sabotaging his book deal. Vijay Jojo Chokal-Ingam also says his sister Mindy, whose real name is Vera Mindy Chokalingam, has done the same to a friend.
Speaking with Page Six, Vijay Jojo Chokal-Ingam said that Mindy Kaling described his book, "Almost Black: The True Story of How I Got Into Medical School by Pretending To Be Black," as shameful to the family. Yet the brother notes that the book is no more shameful than Mindy Kaling's character on "The Mindy Project," who sleeps with many men.
Mindy Kaling has already denied involvement with the development of the book in past interviews, but Vijay continues to belie his sister's claims. He told Page Six that "The Mindy Project" star knew what it was all about from the very beginning and that she was in on the scheme to write the tell-all.
The Wrap reports that the book details how Vijay took advantage of a loophole in his medical school admission. However, he has not pursued becoming a doctor and now works as a consultant on college admissions.
It's not just Vijay that Mindy Kaling have sabotaged as the brother also accused his sister of not helping Annie Baker with her book deal when she said she would. Baker is the sister of Mindy Kaling's ex-boyfriend, Benjamin Nugent. "My sister has engineered similar public and private plots against her many frenemies in Hollywood," Vijay Jojo Chokal-Ingam further said of "The Mindy Project" creator.
Because of these rift between siblings, Mindy and Vijay supposedly avoid each other at family gatherings and haven't talked in two years. The two were born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts to an immigrant family.
Meanwhile, Mindy Kaling's reps have not acknowledged Vijay's latest pronouncements. In fact, the actress-writer is putting focus in the promotion of "The Mindy Project" Season 5, which has recently wrapped up filming its 100th episode.
Fans of "The Mindy Project" should expect a satisfying premiere to Season 5. "Our creative executive at Hulu just saw the premiere and was like, "Oh my God, I love the ending," Mindy Kaling told Glamour. "The Mindy Project's" new season begins streaming on Hulu Tuesday, Oct. 4.
