"Arrow" season 5 will finally return Wednesday, Oct. 5 with the new season set to go back to the roots of the show with harsher vigilantism, first up on the chopping block is Chad L. Coleman as kingpin Tobias Church who will be the villain of the season's premiere.
According to the plot synopsis of the "Arrow" season 5 premiere on Spoiler TV, "Legacy" will have Oliver (Stephen Amell) working solo once again as the Green Arrow after Diggle (David Ramsey) and Thea (Willa Holland) left Team Arrow due to Laurel's (Katie Cassidy) death in the last season. "Arrow" season 5 will premiere with Oliver trying to balance his job as the new mayor of Star City with his night time vigilantism, with only Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) acting as his sole support.
Apparently, a number of other people have also taken to the Green Arrow's influence by engaging in their own vigilantism by the time of the "Arrow" season 5 premiere. Unfortunately, these new would-be heroes are also severely inexperienced and so Oliver must take them under his wing, realizing along the way that Star City might definitely need more heroes in the coming days.
As shown in the "Arrow" season 5 "Break The Rules" trailer on the official CW YouTube channel, Oliver will take the younger vigilantes to school. Meanwhile, Oliver will also be breaking more than rules with his apparent return to maiming, and possible even killing, criminals once again with his first major target being Tobias Church.
IGN's report of Coleman's casting as Church indicates that the character will be "an imposing gangster looking to unite the various criminal enterprises in Star City under his own singular command." Yet it seems that Church's attempt at becoming the overlord of the Star City underworld will not last past the "Arrow" season 5 premiere, with the "Break The Rules" trailer indicating that he will be upstaged by another more mysterious villain.
All in all, "Arrow" season 5 seems like it truly will embrace the more grounded approach it had during the previous seasons in contrast to the highly criticized tone it featured during the last season. The "Arrow" season 5 premiere will air Wednesday, Oct. 5 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW.
