Familiar characters from the original "Power Rangers" series will appear in the movie adaptation. Just recently, director Dean Israelite confirmed another character's appearance in the film and that's Goldar, Rita Repulsa's (Elizabeth Banks) monstrous henchman.
Goldar's presence in "Power Rangers" was announced by Israelite at the Lionsgate panel at New York Comic-Con last weekend, Entertainment Weekly reported. The actor who will portray the creature, however, is still unknown as of this moment.
Goldar had terrorized the Power Rangers in the '90s TV series. Rita's winged warrior was depicted as a monster that donned gold-plated armor and was armed with a sword. Goldar will join Zordon (Bryan Cranston), Alpha 5 (Bill Hader), and the Zords. The film's main cast is rounded up by Dacre Montgomery (Red Ranger Jason), Naomi Scott (Pink Ranger Kimberly), Becky G (Yellow Ranger Trini), RJ Cyler (Blue Ranger Billy), and Ludi Lin (Black Ranger Zack).
Five new character posters were also revealed last week. The photos showcased each of the Rangers in solo poses. Check them out on IGN.
You can also see Rita's costume on People. According to Banks, the "Power Rangers" movie's take on the villain is "a modern and edgy re-imagining." In the film, Rita will have a backstory that links her to the new Rangers.
Israelite said that the "Power Rangers" movie has growing up as its main theme. The upcoming film is "a grounded, character-driven origin story that was always set to the backdrop of this fantastic adventure," EW further reported.
The filmmaker added that his goal while making the "Power Rangers" movie is for it to "remain true to the spirit of the franchise" that he grew up watching and loving. According to Israelite, the "Power Rangers" crew "worked really hard to re-imagine it and reinvent it."
"Power Rangers" is akin to the superhero films from Marvel and DC, which both heavily dabbled on tech for special effects. In Israelite's movie, they made sure to develop the cast's fighting styles by making them do stunt work. This way, the cast will be able to do their own stunts instead of relying on doubles.
Power Rangers, which are composed of ordinary high school kids, will try to save their small town of Angel Grove from an alien threat. While fighting the invaders, the Mighty Morphin team must overcome their real-life issues and learn how to work alongside each other for the world's safety.
"Power Rangers" will bow in theaters on March 24, 2017. Watch the trailer below.
