It's not easy to say goodbye to something that you really like. As the saying goes, "parting is such sweet sorrow," but sad faces comes with a new beginning; a brighter horizon to look forward to in hopes that it will eventually bring the old habit back. Such is the case of Disney XD's Ultimate Spider-Man.
After four spectacular seasons, everybody's favorite web-slinger will bid bye-bye with a two-part TV series finale on January, 2017, said TV Series Finale. The final episode will be entitled "Graduation Day" - a fitting lead to close an animated series that will go down the ranks of X-Men, Batman and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles of the 90's.
Disney XD's press release said that Graduation Day "will see Spider-Man stop Doctor Octopus and the Superior Sinister Six from destroying all of the heroes in New York City." But while Spidey will take a temporary hiatus, Disney XD will, for their part, prepare a "fresh take" on the swinging web-head.
Newsarama quoted Disney XD Senior Vice President of Programming Marc Buhaj when he said that "Spider-Man is the biggest action hero in the world." He added that Spidey's iconic character "makes relatable and aspirational for the Disney XD audience." As for the new Spider-Man title, Buhaj noted that it will "engage both new and existing Spidey fans" with compelling drama, exciting action and of course, Spider-Man's signature sense of humor.
Disney XD announced Ultimate Spider-Man in early 2012 alongside The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes which was on its second season. Fans saw Peter Parker as a neophyte superhero that teamed up with fellow crime fighters Nova, White Tiger, Iron Fist and Power Man and S.H.I.E.L.D, courtesy of Nick Fury's appeal. In season 3, Spider-Man became a member of the Avengers, but he decided to stick with S.H.I.E.L.D. Its final season brought the emergence of the new Sinister Six, Carnage, Spider-Woman and more.
Disney XD's press release added that from 2016 to date, Ultimate Spider-Man has reached 51 million total views across the United States, generated around 4 million consumer engagements via VOD/STB and is among Disney XD's top5 animated series "in key targeted boy demographics. Disney XD's new Spider-Man title will be aired sometime in 2017.
