"This is Us" Episode 4 revealed the dilemmas of Kevin, Kate and Randall that are rooted from their childhood years. Rebecca was also seen struggling to be a good mother to Randall. Jack, on the other hand, remained supportive of Rebecca and a sweet father to their children.
The past timeline of "This is Us" Episode 4 showed how Kevin was longing for his parents' attention and kept on asking his daddy to watch him swim in the pool. Rebecca was focused on trying to provide Randall's needs while Kevin felt jealous of the attention Randall was getting. Kate also had her own issues as the girls in the neighborhood do not want to play with her because she is fat.
Randall was lost for a moment until Rebecca found her with a group of Black neighbors. Rebecca's attention was caught by one of the ladies and told her to get a barber who knows how to cut Black hair. Rebecca was initially offended by it but she came to her senses and acknowledged the recommendation on "This is Us."
"This is Us" then saw Rebecca reaching out to the lady to ask for the name of the barber and Rebecca also asked whether she can let Randall play with her son. While Rebecca was busy with Randall, Jack had to tend to Kevin and Kate. Jack apologized to Kevin for not being able to watch him in the pool while he tried to boost Kate's confidence after she was disregarded by her playmates.
Back in the present timeline of "This is Us," Kevin was seen struggling in New York because of an actress who hated him for getting the part in a New York play. Kate met Toby's ex-wife Josie and stalked her. She even applied to work for Josie but it disappointed Toby.
"This is Us" Episode 4 then saw Toby revealing his ex-wife's cheating behavior and how he was hurt so Kate should not be admiring her. Toby and Kate reconciled while Kevin surprisingly went back to Los Angeles. He went home to Randall's where he met Randall's biological father William.
This episode of "This is Us" also revealed how Randall struggled to be a Black man in a White family. He told his father that he created a list of Black people who he met in his search for his father. He revealed that whenever he met a Black man, he wondered if that could be his real father.
