Disney's well-loved classic fairy tales will soon be accessible on the social site Snapchat. In partnership with the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the studio has launched "Oh, My Disney Snapchat," which will feature images from the fairy tales. But in keeping with the platform, it will have a flair that's more familiar to social media users.
"Beauty and the Beast" is the first story that will be tackled in this collaboration. Its story on Snapchat will be done as memes, doodles, pop culture references or filtered snaps using LACMA's 130,000 art work collection. The first images will be published via LACMA's snapshot account and OhMyDisney snapchat account beginning Oct. 19.
The launch of "Beauty and the Beast" on these Snapchat accounts comes as Disney is releasing its live-action film about the fairy tale on March 2017. The movie is a star-studded ensemble with Emma Watson, Dan Stevens, Luke Evans, Ian McKellen, Josh Gad, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Emma Thompson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Audra McDonald.
Meanwhile, the plan for the Snapchat retelling is to deliver different Disney fairy tales at least twice a month and it will be "intentionally humorous," according to the press release sent to Parent Herald via email. The hope is to tap a diverse and younger audience who would be interested about art, art history and looking at artworks from a fresh point of view. "This collaboration is a natural way to add a little magic to the artworks and storytelling to reach a new generation of art and Disney fans alike," Disney executive Dan Reynolds said.
LACMA has started building its social media presence when it opened its Snapchat account in 2014. In fact, Webby Awards cited it for its effective use of social media. Meanwhile, Disney's Interactive Media division, which handles its social media sites on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Vine and Snapchat have at least over 1.5 billion followers combined.
