The Houston Rockets may have been ineffective on defense for the past two years, but nonetheless, they are predicted to be a top-five seed in the Western Conference this season. To recall two seasons ago, James Harden of the Rockets was effective defensively and was second to Steph Curry in the season MVP race.
In the 2014-15 season, the Rockets placed sixth in the league with regards to defensive efficiency before dropping to 20th place last season. Currently, the Rockets are ranked 26th in defensive efficiency, but it is too early to count the Rockets defense out, according to Today's Fastbreak. So far in the season, the Rockets have allowed 109 points per game.
However, it would be fair to consider the numerous new recruits of the Rockets and the little time they have played together. It will definitely take time for Rockets' head coach Jeff Bzdelik to work things out and make the team gel.
Meanwhile, Harden has not been hampered by any an offseason injury, and neither has he reported out of shape in camp like he did in the past season. This means that Harden can finally focus on his defense and silence his critics.
Rockets' center-forward Clint N'Dumba-Capela is trying to fill in the void Dwight Howard left on both sides of the floor. Although he might not be as intimidating as Howard was defensively, he is definitely a solid defender in the rim.
Harden and the Rockets were the fourth highest-scoring team last season despite being shadowed by injuries and lack of team chemistry. There is no reason to stop the trend this season, especially with a healthy Harden.
This is a bold prediction given the tough competition in the Western Conference. Despite the issues that crowded the Rockets last season, they were able to make it to the playoffs and win a few games. Do you believe the Rockets will be able to break in the West's top five this season?
