In an unprecedented move, known women's magazine Glamour includes in its list of honorees for Women Of The Year, rock star and activist, Bono, a man. Obviously, the news generated backlash especially from people, mostly women, calling out the magazine for sensationalizing their magazine's award and mocking its choice of including Bono.
Glamour magazine's editor-in-chief Cindi Leive defends the controversial decision saying that for past 26 years of the magazine, it has only chosen women for the Women Of The Year award but it fails to recognize the efforts and actions of men who fight along women against inequality. Glamour cited the trend of men calling themselves feminists and the popular #HeForShe campaign of the United Nations.
CNN's Christiane Amanpour supports Glamour magazine's move to include Bono in this year's honorees for Women Of The Year. The seasoned journalist says "Bono is making it clear that powerful men can, and should take on these deep-rooted issues".
Christiane Amanpour also shares that when asked regarding his inclusion in the honorees for Women Of The Year, Bono has said that he does not deserve the awards. The U2 front man also said he is grateful for the honor and adding "men are largely responsible for the problem, so we have to be involved in the solution".
The other honorees for the Women Of The Year award are five-time gold medalist Simone Biles, Black Lives Matter movement founders Alicia Garza, Opal Tometi and Patrisse Cullors, IMF director Christine Lagarde, ISIS-survivor Nadia Murad, plus-sized model Ashley Graham, fashion designer Miuccia Prada, singer Gwen Stefani, actress Zendaya and Standford University sexual assault survivor only known as Emily Doe.
Among the different negative sentiments the news has made, NPR has a point. NPR has said that the news of Bono among one of the honorees for Glamour's Women Of The Year, it created so much buzz that other people who dismiss the magazine's annual awards are intrigued by the decision. It also spotlights the other women honorees because of this.
What do you think? Does Bono deserve being one of the honorees for Women Of The Year?
