A new study suggests scientists have intercepted messages transmitted by aliens from space beyond the solar system. A paper published in the journal Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific - "Discovery of peculiar periodic spectral modulations in a small fraction of solar type stars" says signals from 234 star systems are likely to be caused by intelligent life rather than something natural, indicating toward Alien life.
Professor Stephen Hawking and his fellow scientist will work on the "signals from stars" to investigate whether they are really associated with alien intelligent life forms. The report states that the scientist detected signals that have exactly the shape of an extra-terrestrial intelligence (ETI) signal predicted in the previous publication and are therefore in agreement with this hypothesis.
Per researchers' data, only 234 anomalies were explained out of 2.5 million stars. The ETI hypothesis is that anomalies are only found in a very small fraction of stars within a narrow spectral range centered near the spectral type of the sun.
Astronomers used mathematical tool to analyze the super quick light pulses of about less than a trillionth of a second to reach their conclusion. Other causes they ruled out were instrument effects, rotation of molecules, rapid stellar pulsations and chemistry.
Reportedly, Breakthough Listen and Stephen Hawking with Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg will now study the star signals to understand more about them. The group said in a statement that scientists have seen one in 10,000 objects with unusual spectra that is certainly worthy of additional study.
Stephen Hawking and the group added that the extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. It is too early to unequivocally attribute these purported signals to the activities of extraterrestrial civilizations.
SETI - the internationally agreed-upon protocols for searches for evidence of advanced life beyond Earth require candidates to be confirmed by independent groups using their own telescopes. For all natural explanations to be exhausted before invoking extraterrestrial agents as an explanation.
They need to use two or more independent telescopes to confirm detections to carefully work to differentiate false positive rates and to rule out natural and instrumental explanations, Express.co.uk reported.
