Matt Smith hasn't been on "Doctor Who" since the long-running series' Season 7. In recent months, rumors have surfaced about Smith returning as the Eleventh Doctor or another character in Season 10. Those rumors have been refuted but Smith recently expressed that he's willing to return to "Doctor Who," though some aspects should be considered.
While talking about his new show "The Crown," where he portrays Prince Philip, Smith acknowledged to Entertainment Weekly that there are rumors about his return to "Doctor Who." The actor, however, said that he hasn't been approached by the "Doctor Who" team about the matter but he would "consider any approach and take it very seriously."
Smith also revealed that he's still a fan of "Doctor Who" and watches it regularly, adding that he "will always support it" because it gave him "such a wonderful break." Prior to his departure from the well-loved series, he imparted some advice to the current portrayer of the Time Lord, Peter Capaldi.
Smith advised Capaldi to "listen to no one" because "there's so many opinions out there and you've got to filter so many of those voices out," EW further reported. The actor believes that being the titular character on "Doctor Who" requires "a clear vision" and he thinks that Capaldi does have that.
Three prominent theories have surfaced about how Smith could return to "Doctor Who," according to Screen Rant. The first theory is a multi-Doctor episode, which already happened during the 50th anniversary episode titled "Day of the Doctor" in 2013. That episode showcased Smith's iteration of the Time Lord and former Doctor David Tennant.
Screen Rant also noted that the first theory is the most likely option for Smith's possible return. "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat is known for reusing characters he's made.
Another theory puts Smith as the next Doctor when Capaldi departs "Doctor Who." The third theory, on the other hand, speculates that Capaldi's Doctor could encounter a problem in his regeneration abilities and temporarily revert back to this eleventh iteration instead of assuming a new appearance.
"Doctor Who" Season 10 airs in April 2017, with Pearl Mackie as The Doctor's new companion, Bill. A Christmas special will be released this year and will feature actor Justin Chatwin in a superhero role inspired from Christopher Reeve's portrayal of Superman/Clark Kent, Parent Herald previously reported.
Moffat is leaving "Doctor Who" after Season 10. There are speculations that the upcoming season would also be Capaldi's last portrayal of the Time Lord. However, that remains to be seen.
