Johnny Depp is arguably one of the most iconic stars, famous in his portrayal of oddball characters. Although the actor is currently facing abuse accusations during his divorce battle affecting his opportunity for a significant "Harry Potter" role. J.K Rowling slams critics questioning Depp's casting choice.
There is no wonder why in the upcoming "Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them" movie, Depp snagged the role of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald. His naturally unique persona is anticipated to supplement the adventures Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) in New York's secret society of witches and wizards, long before Harry Potter gets to hold his book in school.
The casting choice was carefully thought not only by director David Yates, but also by producer David Heyman. They simply went for the most inspired, interesting, right fit for that character who's going take this in an interesting direction.
The Mirror reported that's exactly what J.K Rowling sees in the 53-year-old actor who had been challenged following abuse allegations with ex-wife Amber Heard. In the same report, the "Harry Potter" author expressed how thrilled she was to have Depp on board following a bitter year. She said that Depp has done incredible things that had made him an excellent actor, and undoubtedly fit for the role of dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.
Yates was also quick to defend Depp against the critics who does not see him fit for the role during an interview Daily Mail noted. The director pointed out the "Pirates And The Carribean" actor's fearlessness and distinctiveness that makes him perfect for the dark wizard role. Depp may only have a brief appearance in the wizardly story, but the director encourages fans to trust the filmmakers for adding Depp in the five-movie prequel to the "Harry Potter" franchise.
Lastly, the director quoted "In this business, you're a star one week, people are saying odd things the next, but no one takes away your pure talent."
