On the heels of the weekend premiere for "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," the fifth installment of the franchise, the movie's lead star, Tom Cruise, said that they are already set to start working on "Mission: Impossible 6."
Cruise confirms that the sixth installment is already in the works during an appearance on Jon Stewart's "The Daily Show" to promote his latest movie, according to Deadline.
"We're starting to work on it now. We'll probably start shooting it next summer," Cruise told the talkshow host after the latter commented that Cruise can still do more "Mission: Impossible" movies if he wanted to. The actor also told Stewart that the franchise is close to his heart. "I love making these movies. Mission's the first film I ever produced," he said in the televised interview uploaded on Comedy Central's YouTube channel.
If things all come together for "Mission: Impossible 6," with the script, director and cast already chosen, the movie will be on course at a pace earlier than expected, according to The Verge.
The first film, "Mission: Impossible," premiered in theaters in 1996, where the world got to learn the exploits and missions of Secret Agent Ethan Hunt, Cruise's character. Four years later, the sequel, "Mission: Impossible II" followed and then "Mission: Impossible III" came six years after that.
"Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol," the fourth installment, debuted in theaters in 2011 while "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation," which is expected to break box office records this Friday, took four years to happen after the last.
Meanwhile, early reviews for "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" have already started coming out, and the film has been getting a favorable 92 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes. Metacritic, on the other hand, has pooled 41 reviews for the movie, with a total rating of 75 percent so far.
Box office projections also show that the film is expected to hit the $40-million mark when it opens, and this number may even go higher, according to Entertainment Weekly.
"Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" also stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson and Alec Baldwin. The movie is directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has worked with Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow."
While Cruise has always been committed to doing his stunts, he brought his game to a whole new level for this latest "Mission: Impossible" movie. The clip showing him hanging from the outside of a plane in the teasers was not a camera trick. The actor admitted that he had his fears filming this stunt. "I couldn't sleep the night before, then came the day. I thought, 'Oh, this is really going to happen?'" according to ABC News.
