A study published in the journal Affective Disorders, it was revealed that some vitamin supplements that are supposed to alleviate depression are actually making your mood worse. It was mentioned that the researchers focused on a study which involves seasonal depression. The team of researchers studied the correlation of the vitamin B-12 and its capability to alleviate seasonal depression.

Though the study's primary intention was to find a way to combat depression, it was added that it turned out to be a total opposite. It was originally assumed that B vitamins and folic acid can help avoid and lessen the symptoms of depression but when the participants were given the vitamin intake, which has the same components as that of the Vitamin B-12 and folic acid didn't have any effect on the subjects.

Everyday Health mentioned the importance of taking the right vitamin supplements as taking the wrong ones, which can lead to deficiencies, can make the individual feel sluggish and depressed. It was mentioned that lack of magnesium is often caused by unhealthy diet, chronic stress. NIH suggests that magnesium intake should be balanced as too much can make the individual go through hormonal imbalance as well.

Psychology Today also explained that folic acid should not be taken in excess for people with depression and other mood disorders. It then highlighted that folic acid is the wrong treatment for depression. It was explained that a form of folic acid, l-methylfolate is a special form of folic acid that can boost the supply of serotonin which can help with depression.
