Donald Trump & The New Department Of Education: Ben Carson As Secretary? What Changes Could Be Expected?

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares for his move to the White House in January 2017, he's slowly shaping up his government with potential cabinet secretaries. Reports say that he's likely to pick Ben Carson for Secretary of Education and the new president is expected to shake up the department in unconventional ways. What should parents have to know about what might potentially happen in the Department of Education under Trump?

According to Whiteboard Advisors, Donald Trump has been considering Ben Carson for the Education post since May. Back then, Ben Carson and Donald Trump went head to head for the presidential nomination during the Republican primary. But when it was clear that Trump was the stronger pick, Carson decided to get behind the hotel mogul for his presidential bid.

Ben Carson's appointment might be met with a lot of opposition since he is not qualified for the position, according to Patheos. As a known climate change end evolution denier, his personal beliefs as a conservative Christian might go against what should be taught to kids in school.

Another potential Education secretary pick is Williamson M. Evers, according to Politico. He has worked with the department from 2007 to 2009 under President George W. Bush. He is also a consultant to Donald Trump's transition team.

Donald Trump expressed during the campaign that he might potentially eliminate the Education Department if he wins the presidency. Instead, control of this will go to local governments.

But if he's not completely eliminating the department, Donald Trump hopes to cut down its function, specifically mentioning the abolishment of Common Core, Fed Smith reports. Student immigrants might also be affected by a Donald Trump presidency because of the incoming president's tough stance on immigration, according to Miami Herald.

Donald Trump also proposed a $20 billion grant for the expansion of charter schools and private schools that would cater to families under the low-income bracket. He has plans for vouchers or tax-credit programs that would assist students to get into good schools. No concise details have been laid out so far as the transition is still being set up.
