The live-action movie, "Ghost In The Shell" just released its first official trailer, giving manga fans a sneak peek of what to expect in the Hollywood version of this anime classic. It also gave viewers a first look at Scarlett Johansson's portrayal of Major, the cyborg commander tasked to fight cyber criminals. It is no secret that the casting of Scarlett Johansson was heavily criticized as whitewashing, as the role and the movie are entirely Japanese.
So does the first movie teaser of "Ghost In The Shell" look promising? A report from Forbes claim that based on the brief trailer, it looks like the Hollywood adaptation has bigger problems to face than the casting of Scarlett Johansson. The Forbes article said that the movie appears to have copied a lot from the 1995 version of the "Ghost InThe Shell."
Another thing that bothers Ollie Barder, the author of the Forbes article is the fact that in the live action "Ghost In The Shell," Scarlett Johansson's character as Major seems unaware of her origins nor her identity. This is said to be a total contrast to the original story wherein Major is fully aware of where she came from and what happened to her. Barder added that the though the trailer doesn't reflect a great adaptation, he is still willing to give it a chance.
Meanwhile, amidst the criticism of whitewashing, the director of "Ghost In The Shell," Rupert Sanders defends Scarlett Johansson by saying that she is one of the best actresses today as published on The Verge. The British director stressed that Scarlett's years of experience and attitude makes her perfect for the role.
Are you happy that Scarlett Johansson is Major in the live action movie, "Ghost In The Shell? This well-loved anime classic will be available in cinemas on Mar 2017. "Ghost In The Shell" also stars Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, and Michael Pitt.
