The latest installment of the"Mission: Impossible" franchise is a huge success after delivering $56 million for its first Friday-to-Sunday debut ($55.6 million as per industry estimate) at 3,956 theaters, according to Deadline.
Deadline further notes that "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" has achieved the second highest weekend sales among all five "Mission: Impossible" movies. Moreover, it is the third highest opening weekend in Cruise's entire career, following "War of the Worlds" with $64.9 million and "Mission: Impossible II" at $57.8 million.
Forbes suggests that the opening of the said film has been helpful to the sales. Initially, it is set to be released on December 23, 2015. However, it has been moved earlier to avoid the competition with "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" and in hope of blocking a couple of weeks of prime IMAX real estate. If the "Fantastic Four" is not as good as its previous installment and if "The Man from U.N.C.L.E" fails to exceed its success, "Mission : Impossible - Rogue Nation" will be the last blockbuster of the summer.
The movie has received strong and positive reviews. Most fans of the action movie compare it to another secret agent action flick, "James Bond." However, Bond was British, and when Hollywood decided to produce its own superspy franchise two decades ago, they picked the best man for the role, Tom Cruise. The latest "Mission: Impossible" franchise still maintains the "Cruise-ing attitude," as Entertainment Weekly puts it.
An earlier review of the said movie, in a separate report from Forbes, claims that it is "better than Bourne" and "better than Bond." "Mission: Impossible - Rouge Nation" is filled with jaw-dropping action and stunts, but, at the same time, also has feel-good humor, which makes the amazing superhero-like agent sensible and realistic.
Moreover, the critic finds the plot straightforward, delivered with dynamic acting and old-school tricks. Although there are familiar parts that one may find from the four previous "Mission Impossible" movies, the whole film is designed to please the crowd with relentless interesting, funny and amusing treats.
Some of the reviews the movie has received include that of Manohla Dargis from New York Times, who said, "Watching Tom Cruise hurtle through the latest 'Mission: Impossible,' taking one blow after another, you can't help worrying that he won't be able to keep this action stuff up. It looks so hard! But here he is, the 53-year-old Tom Terrific, holding onto a plane as it takes off, defying sense and gravity, and making you wonder (not for the first time) if he would actually die for our pleasure."
According to Forbes, the movie has already earned $65 million internationally.
