Fans of the "The Hunger Games" are filled with excitement and sadness as the release of "Mockingjay Part 2" approaches because the said film is the last installment of the franchise, which started in 2008 and catapulted Jennifer Lawrence to stardom. But, is it really the last? Josh Hutcherson's response to Conan O'Brien at Comic-Con is suggesting otherwise.
Hutcherson, who plays Peeta Mellark in the hit series, was asked if the audience can expect a continuation in the series and he responded with, "There is...I'm sorry. No, I can't say that. I'm sorry. We'll see what happens," according to MoviePilot.
The actor initially hinted that there might be more of the survival game movie, which stirred the audience, who wanted to see more from the story. However, he was quick to withdraw his statement. In view of clearing things up, Hutcherson was asked again if the possible sequel was real or not.
"Yeah, I mean the truth is I don't know anything. I would like there to be more because they're really fun to make, and it's a fun character, but... afraid that I'm not clear on that one," Hutcherson said, according to a report from Huffington Post. "If it does happen, at the same time it's like, it has to be something that Suzanne [Collins] really believes in. It has to be something that she creates naturally. It's not just trying to make more movies out of it," he added.
Despite Hutcherson's misleading statement, sources close to Lionsgate confirmed that no sequel is on the works. While Hutcherson showed enthusiasm in reprising his role, lead character, Lawrence, thinks the current cast is too old, Entertainment Weekly has learned.
"I know there's going to be a reboot with younger, hotter people in our lifetime," Lawrence said. "Like, within 10 years."
Director Francis Lawrence, in an interview last year with MTV, revealed that everybody is considering about expanding the franchise and they had been talking about it. However, he believed that it needed careful planning. The director considered the idea of war and the fierce character of the girl on fire, Katnis, to be the major factor that made the story great, and just saying that they would remain in the "Hunger Games" world is risky.
However, it doesn't mean that a sequel is impossible, he just felt that they need to present something new. "New characters need to be created that are just as compelling as Katniss. It's a tricky thing, but I'm definitely open to talking about it, and I think everybody's thinking about it. Everybody loves the world, and the ideas," Lawrence said.
"Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" will be released on November 20, 2015.
