It has been a long road for "Making a Murderer." The Netflix documentary series that gripped the nation has been a success with viewers and critics alike.
The cases of "Making a Murderer" convicts Steven Avery, 54, and his nephew Brendan Dassey, 27, chart events that happened in 2005 against victim Teresa Halbach. The cases continue to be heard in court today due to various appeals.
A second season of "Making a Murderer" is already in the works, but Netflix has not yet given its official release date. But since the release of the first series, a lot has happened to Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey's case. Below is a timeline of where "Making a Murderer" is so far.
"Making a Murderer" Season 1 was launched on Netflix in December 2015, following 10 years of filming. Director and producer Moira Demos and Laura Ricciardi revealed in January 2016 that they have more interviews with Steven Avery because he had pending appeals on his case.
At that time, the "Making a Murderer" has not yet been confirmed for Season 2, but Demos and Ricciardi has constantly been documenting new materials, IGN reports. Demos and Ricciardi said that there are still plenty of evidence and support that can be presented for a second season if Netflix decides to have it.
Meanwhile, "Making a Murderer" subject Steven Avery has new representation in lawyer Kathleen Zellner for his court appeal. Around the same time in January, she sought to get further evidence for her client via an extensive DNA test, as reported on Parent Herald. In July 2016, Variety reports that Netfix has finally greenlit "Making a Murderer" Season 2.
In August 2016, a judge has finally ordered the release of Brendan Dassey from prison. The 91-page court order cited that his testimonies about the murder of Teresa Halbach have been coerced by authorities. According to New York Times, the police took advantage of his age (16) and mental capacity in its interrogation. The state appealed this decision in September 2016.
The judge, however, upheld the order for "Making a Murderer" subject Brendan Dassey's release this November. A report from Kare 11 states that the convict must be released by Friday, Nov. 25, despite an emergency appeal by the state.
