Disney just released their newest coding tutorial called "Moana: Wayfinding with Code" today. The characters used are from the upcoming Disney animated film "Moana".
According to The Walt Disney Company, this tutorial was created in collaboration with Code.org and will be available in 23 languages for more than 180 countries including Samoan Polynesian. There will also be activations along with the launch to spread the word further, inviting millions of students to learn how to code using "Moana: Wayfinding with Code".
Disney also partnered with Apple to host coding sessions for kids as well as well as with Code.org who will feature the "Moana: Wayfinding with Code" on their site.
In the tutorial, young learners will help Moana and Maui, the main characters of the animated film "Moana" navigate through the ocean using codes. When attacked, the students will have to help the characters dodge the pirates using their coding skills.
In a report published by TechCrunch, "Moana: Wayfinding with Code" is very different compared to the previous tutorials launched by Disney because this has a more gamey feel to it with more advanced visuals in high resolution. The tutorial uses a Java drag and drop experience so that they do not have to write the codes anymore.
Over the past two years, Disney has created and launched two coding tutorials which featured characters from Star Wars and Frozen. With these tutorials, The Walt Disney Company says they have taught over 40 million children how to code.
According to the CEO of Code.org, Hadi Partovi, they have discovered that students got more interested in trying learning about coding when it involves something that entertains them and something that they are interested in like their favorite Disney characters. He also says that their work with Disney over the past two years has greatly helped Hour of Code, inspiring millions of kids to try coding and seek an education in computer science.
"Moana: Wayfinding with Code" is available to play on your computer or you can go to your local Apple Store from Dec. 5 to 11, 2016 for a workshop on the game.
