'Emerald City' News, Updates, and Release Date: Welcome to a Darker, Sexier Oz; NBC Pilot to Air on January 6

NBC's "Emerald City" offers a darker, more sinister version of Oz. The initial trailer has just been released for the sexy and more mysterious makeover of this much-loved, classic storybook series from L. Frank Baum.

NBC's new series, "Emerald City," has been cast for a 10-episode pilot season. According to EW, NBC's "Emerald City" is the modern retelling of Dorothy's tale will excite fans and pique their interest. Toto is now a trained K-9 police dog, but he and Dorothy still get transported from Kansas to Oz by a giant tornado.

NBC's "Emerald City" story still kicks off with the death of the hated, wicked witch. But her evil sisters aren't too happy about this and they wreak havoc on Emerald City unless Dorothy and her new-found friends stop them.

NBC's "Emerald City" features Adria Arjona from "Person of Interest" as Dorothy. The TV drama will stay true to the spirit of the original Wizard of Oz narrative. However, TVLine said that the network's depiction of Oz is more "Game of Thrones" in vibe and setting.

In her search to find the Wizard, Dorothy meets a host of different characters, including a not-so-skinny Scarecrow, played by Oliver-Jackson Cohen. Before she finds the Wizard, NBC's "Emerald City" has the fearless Dorothy battling evil witches, warlocks, and other creatures of the dark.

When Dorothy meets the famed wizard, played by Vincent D' Onofrio, he asks her an important question: "Ask yourself why you were brought to Oz," he says. "Are you just a girl from Kansas, or are you more?"

NBC's "Emerald City" is directed by Tarsem Singh of "Mirror Mirror" fame. The thrilling series will debut Jan. 6 at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
