The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Classic Edition is selling fast--a sure sign that it's a big hit. This is great news for Nintendo, but it isn't for the company's throng of consumers who have been waiting to get their hands on the 2016 version of the console that was first launched in the 1980s.
With limited supplies, some stores are finding it hard to keep up with demand for the NES Classic Edition. Walmart, for instance, had to apologize to some customers for delayed deliveries, BGR reports.
Walmart explained that its stores received more orders of the NES Classic Edition than its existing supply can fulfill. Walmart said it will receive additional units in the next two weeks, and assured customers that orders will be delivered ahead of the holidays. The retail giant is also giving customers the option to cancel their orders if they can't wait any longer for them to be delivered.
Just moments after being launched early this month, the NES Classic Edition sold out fast, an indication of many people's nostalgia for the NES console. The device has the look and feel of the original NES, and includes games that were popular through the 90's, such as "Super Mario Bros." and "Donkey Kong."
In a statement quoted by Forbes, Nintendo said it is working to keep up with consumer demand for the NES Classic Edition, which it described as a "hot item." The Japanese company also promised a steady flow of additional supplies of the NES Classic Edition through the holiday season.
Meanwhile, a gamer and eBay seller posted a video on social media of an alternative--albeit a quirky one--for those who couldn't get a hold of the fast-selling Nintendo NES. It's a giant wireless NES controller which also features NES Classic Edition games.
The seller, with the social media ID Ultimate Customs, posted a video on Instagram of himself playing the jumbo console. It is said to still be available, but it comes at a steep price. According to VG 24/7, the user has sold a unit for a whopping $566.
