Drug addiction could be an underlying theme in the plot for "The Crown" Season 2, which is already in the middle of filming. This has been hinted in the first season on Netflix and has history has shown, it bore effects on Queen Elizabeth II's (Claire Foy) reign.
The man who has tarnished the reputation of the monarchy is none other than the queen's prime minister after Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden (Jeremy Northam). He only lasted 18 months as Britain's prime minister in the 1950s despite his popularity with the public.
Anthony Eden resigned from his position following a disastrous deal involving the Aswan Dam at the Suez Canal, which was funded by Britain and its allies. The controversy was heightened by his illness and drug addiction. It would mark the beginning of the fall of the Britain as the world's most powerful, according to Vanity Fair.
But "The Crown" Season 2 will not solely focus on this political controversy. The drama in the queen's personal life will still be central to the show, as unsubstantiated rumors of infidelity on the part of Prince Philip (Matt Smith) also surfaced during this time. Viewers would also want to know how Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret (Vanessa Kirby) repaired their relationship after the latter gave up the love of her life following the palace's directive.
A consultant for the show said that it's not likely Queen Elizabeth II is watching "The Crown" despite its popularity on Netflix. But palace insiders have apparently been keeping tabs of the show and there have been private screenings. The response was mostly positive so far, according to People.
"The Crown" Season 2's air date has not yet been officially announced. According to Express, it is likely that the new season will debut in November 2017. It will cover span the years 1955 through 1965.
