A child with disability is definitely not a burden to parents but at the same time, such children require more care and medical assistance. Some disabilities demand more care than others, which includes a monetary factor as well. Families with low income are therefore helped by the governments in the form of allowances.
According to BBC, the families with children with disabilities eligible for such funds are paid a reasonable amount per year by the Department of Work and Pensions (DWP). Tax credits are also paid to these families to provide extra assistance.
Unfortunately, it was discovered that the departments responsible for delivering allowances and tax credits are not paying some families the share they were supposed to have. Authorities are putting blames on concerned departments.
The departments, however, are only agreeing to pay for recent years even though the deficit is much larger. It is also being said by the departments that such families can claim the right amount when they receive their payments and it is totally up to them.
The Guardian reported that the tax credits set aside by the government for the help of families with children with disabilities couldn't reach them due to a glitch in the database. The government stated that more than £360 million were reserved for disabled children in the past six years.
Charity services are now working in order to get a compensation for the families who missed out almost £4400 per year. Even though charities are accusing the DWP for not doing their work responsibly, the families must also be educated on the matter — from the filling of the application form to submitting it to the concerned department.
Meanwhile, legal and medical counseling in these matters is crucial to avoid any shortcomings in the future. Governments initiative for its citizens should not go wasted.
