"Conviction" digs deeper into the core CIU members with top boss Hayes Morrison being no stranger to scandal. Maxine, former cop, is still struggling with pill addiction, Tes dealing with putting an innocent man in jail, and Frankie with a record and a lover left in jail. This time, one of the forgettable characters was put to the limelight as he deals with a "solid case" in the past.
In "Conviction" Season 1 Episode 8, aptly titled "Bad Deals," Sam, despite losing the CIU head position, continues to work with the team and has kept a clean profile, not until a case in the past crawled back up. This has been the first time viewers get to see Sam experience vulnerability on the same level as that of his colleagues.
The case in "Conviction" Season 1 Episode 8 was about a missing teenager named Sierra Macy who was presumed dead. It was one of Sam's cases in the past wherein he convicted the high school teacher Josh Fleck after pled guilty to "murdering" the victim.
Although a body was never found in "Conviction" Season 1 Episode 8, Sam produced a witness with the help of his then-partner and a blood from Sierra was found in the Josh Fleck's car, putting the victim in the suspect's vehicle and shutting the case.
The body of Sierra Macy was alive and well, though traumatized after being held captive for 10 years. She was able to escape after her captor Peter Gunther died of a heart attack. Turns out, Melissa, the so-called witness, is real abductor of Sierra Macy. In an effort to correct what Sam did in the past, he went to the real suspect's house and got himself in a very tight situation, not until the police came in, just in time in "Conviction" Season 1 Episode 8.
Towards the end of "Conviction" Season 1 Episode 8, it shows how Sam is remorseful of what transpired in the past, the very first time viewers saw what kind of a person and a lawyer he is.
