As "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" is about to hit theaters, the Empire's Death Star has made it to the headlines once again and piqued the interest of viewers, and fans alike. How much would be the cost required to operate such an immensely large space station?
To commemorate the release of "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story," one England-based company unveiled an estimate of how much it would cost to operate the Star Wars franchise Empire's Death Star. Ovo Energy, an energy supply company, in collaboration with Alexander Barnett, a math professor at Dartmouth University, and Stephen Skolnick, editor of Physics Central, summed up the total cost of one operational day of the Empire's Death Star.
A staggering $7.7 octillion (a number with 27 zeros) is what would take for a whole day's worth of operations in the Empire's Death Star. Ovo Energy took into consideration the manpower required to operate such a feat, totaling to 2, 068, 937, with General Staff 1, 700, 000, Imperial Navy and Army 342, 953, and Stormtroopers 25, 948, according to the infographic created by Ovo, reported by Mental Floss.
Quite a number of mouths to feed! That is why meals aboard the Empire's Death Star would sum up to approximately £237,531.31 (or $237,531.31). Don't forget the laundry to keep everyone onboard spick and span. A daily wash for the more than 2 million people on board would cost $62,632 (about £49,655 or AU$84,420), while a daily dry is around $172,185 (about £136,440 or AU$231,900).
From keeping the 85 levels and 257 sublevels lighted and recharging the lasers to destroy a planet, a grand total of $7.7 octillion to operate one whole day in the Empire's Death Star. This is actually 30 trillion times more money than there is on Earth. One of the reasons why the immense space station should stay in fiction, in "Rogue One: A Stars Wars Story."
An earlier estimate was calculated by Lehigh University economics students. But it focused on the building of the intergalactic space weapon, which would cost $852 quadrillion to construct and take 800,000 years to finish.
According to Star Wars, the Death Star is the Empire's ultimate weapon. It is a moon-sized space station with the ability to destroy an entire planet. But the Emperor and Imperial officers like Grand Moff Tarkin underestimated the tenacity of the Rebel Alliance, who refused to bow to this technological terror.
May the force be with you as "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" opens in theaters beginning December 14, 2016.
