Break Media's Evan Cholfin has been hired to adapt SEGA video games and turn them into films. As part of SEGA's expansion strategy, the company together with its partner are considering several titles for the film adaptation.
As the new Head of Development and Production, Evan Cholfin of Stories International by SEGA and Hakuhodo DY Group will focus on certain video games and turn them into other forms of entertainment such as films. This is not a new role for Cholfin as he has worked with Break Media, CAA, Steven Zaillian and David Fincher in development before.
According to Variety, Stories International has decided to commence its movie adaptation as it has claimed the rights to adapt certain game titles. Stories International's portfolio includes "Shinobi", "Virtual Fighter", "Golden Axe", "Altered Beast", "Streets of Rage", "Crazy Taxi", and "Rise of Nightmares."
SEGA's decision of hiring Evan Cholfin to head one of their departments is part of the company's expansion initiative. Cholfin is expected to work closely with US-based CEO Tomoya Suzuki of Stories. They will have to coordinate with Hakuhodo DY group in Japan in crafting the developments for the Asian market.
In line with this expansion plan, SEGA invested in All Nippon Entertainment Works to claim rights to certain Japanese movie, TV show, book title holder. This investment aims to strengthen SEGA (Stories) entertainment efforts.
Stories' CEO shared that Cholfin has an "impeccable taste". SEGA and its partner would likely expect great quality and innovative output from Cholfin's with his knowledge and background in development and entertainment production. They look forward to having creations which will last long and leave an impact for centuries.
With this, other game developer companies are planning to do just as SEGA had planned. We can recall that Electronic Arts has tried but ended unsuccessfully with its "Need for Speed" adaptation that garnered low viewership and ratings. Other game developers such as Ubisoft is also planning to create its own arm to adapt tentpole titles into films.
