With only a few weeks left in 2016, Facebook posted on its blog a year-end review of the most-discussed stories on its social media platform. Stories included in the top 10 list includes the Olympics, Rodrigo Duterte, and Pokemon Go.
According to the Verge, the Facebook most-discussed stories list consists of the video game hype set by "Pokemon Go," a response to police brutality with "Black Lives Matter," two sports events which is the Olympics and the Super Bowl, the death of David Bowie and Muhammad Alli, and four politics-related stories which is the US elections, Philippine elections, Brazil politics, and Brexit.
Other than the Facebook most-discussed stories list, Facebook also shared this year's top 10 Facebook live video, included in the list was Buzzfeed and Viral Thread. Number one on the Facebook Live video list was Candace Pyne, also known as "Chewbacca Mom" which garnered over 162 million views. the Verge mentions that Payne was the only private user that made it to the Facebook live list.
Payne's Facebook Live video was followed by Ted Yoder's "soundscape," Buzzfeed's "Countdown to the next presidential election," Atlanta Buzz's "People are lining up to hug police officers in Dallas," NBC News' "Election results," Under the Hood's "Video of a truck completely carved out of wood," Viral Thread's "Population count from US to CA," CNN's "Election results on Empire State building," Dena Blizzard's "Pokemon Go for moms 'Chardonnay Go'," and Super Deluxe's "Election map."
According to Facebook's blog entry, the Facebook most-discussed list was measured by how frequently the topic was mentioned on Facebook between January 1 and November 27, 2016. The mentions were collated, and analyzed through an aggregated anonymized methodology and ranked to create an overview of the activities in Facebook within the year, while the top 10 Facebook Live list was measured by the total number of views.
Facebook will also be releasing a personalized year-in-review for all Facebook users. The video will share the user's posts from 2016 that users can edit and share with Friends.
