The highly sought after but extremely hard to find Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) Classic Edition is back in stock at GameStop. But here's the catch: the giant retailer also said the NES Classic Edition will, as usual, be available only in "limited quantities."
GameStop said in a press release that limited numbers of the NES Classic Edition will hit its stores on December 16 and 17, Venture Beat reports. It also advised customers to call GameStop branches or visit GameStop.com for more details on the console's availability.
Considering the unstoppable demand, GameStop said it has begun to take in new shipments of the NES Classic Edition, whose games include classics like Super Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong. However, Venture Beat notes that as of now, the NES Classic Edition is still "impossible" to find.
Since being launched, the NES Classic Edition - which brings back the look and feel of the console that became popular in the late 1980's and 1990's - has been selling out fast. Retailers have struggled to cope with the huge demand, and some like Walmart had to apologize to customers for delayed deliveries after supplies of the console ran out quickly.
Some 196,000 units of the NES Classic Edition were sold in the US from its launch to the end of November, Engadget reports. The numbers are likely to rise as more and more people continue looking for the console both online and in physical stores.
Some retailers have devised creative solutions to cope with the demand for the NES Classic Edition. GameStop's subsidiary ThinkGeek randomly chose people who included the console in their wishlist and gave them 24 hours to purchase it, GameSpot reports. Amazon for its part transferred some supplies from its online to its physical stores.
Although Nintendo has given assurances that new units will be available during the holiday season, gaming enthusiasts believe it's unlikely for anyone who doesn't have the NES Classic Edition yet to get hold of it by Christmas Day.
