Academy-award winner Matthew McConaughey has once again spoken about his commitment to "True Detective." The actor starred in the anthology series' first season, which aired in 2014, and created the iconic character Rust Cohle.
In a recent guest appearance on "The Rich Eisen Show," Matthew McConaughey said that he's on board the sequel, should there be a "True Detective" Season 3, according to Variety. He is aware that there has been a buzz about the show's return despite the lackluster response for Season 2, which did not include him. In fact, HBO hasn't canceled the show.
"If that thing was written well and it came up again, I wouldn't hesitate for a second," Matthew McConaughey told Rich Eisen. But as far as he knows "True Detective" creator Nic Pizzolatto is still not developing the third season. Watch the interview in the video below.
This isn't the first time the actor revealed he wants to reprise Rust Cohle. In June, he told Vanity Fair that he loved playing the character and work on "True Detective" has been one of his best experiences as an actor that he would likely return if asked. He even snagged an Emmy nomination for Best Actor for this role.
But HBO is not rushing Pizzolatto to come up with a new story to "True Detective" Season 3. The network, through its former head of programming Michael Lombardo, admitted that it made a mistake in forcing the writer to come up with a follow-up last year. The result was the critically-panned Season 2 that starred Colin Farrell and Rachel McAdams.
Yet HBO recognizes "True Detective" as a "valuable franchise," hence the option to do more seasons remains open. For now, fans of the show can be assured that a new season will be coming but it might be a while longer as Pizzolatto is going to be busy with other TV projects with HBO.
