"Sherlock" Season 4 is returning in a few days and fans looking forward to watching the JohnLock bromance should expect it will remain stronger. Stars Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock Holmes) and Martin Freeman (John Watson) also discuss what viewers can expect, ahead of the premiere on Jan. 1, 2017.
Before the show's fourth season was confirmed, there have been talks that the relationship between Sherlock and his best friend John -- also known as JohnLock -- could take a backseat. Since John has already become a committed family man by marrying Mary Watson (Amanda Abbington) in an earlier season, he might not have time to devote to helping out Sherlock solve his cases.
But Martin Freeman said that the bromance is strong and alive in "Sherlock" Season 4. "There's no way that this should operate without that friendship," the actor said, according to Radio Times.
Yet being a new parent, John Watson's life will be changed, especially in dealing with his work with the intuitive detective. "The stakes get higher in a different area in his life," Martin Freeman said.
Danger is indeed lurking in "Sherlock" Season 4, especially when Sherlock will have to deal with the consequences of his previous actions. "We're getting pay-offs in this series that are to do with how this began," Benedict Cumberbatch told Digital Spy. He hopes viewers will pay real attention to what will go on in the show's three episodes. "You have to keep swinging from one to the next to really understand," he said.
"Sherlock" Season 4 will descend into a much darker territory and the threats might be coming from announced villain Culverton Smith (Toby Jones). The character has been described as more evil than Sherlock's nemesis Moriarity (Andrew Scott).
But earlier spoilers also reveal Moriarty is not completely off the hook as the big bad. In July, Parent Herald reported that the actor was filming with the Sherlock cast and crew.
