Jim Moriarty is back on "Sherlock" Season 4 and it's not just a rumor this time around. The villain, who was shown to have shot himself in earlier seasons, seemed alive and well, as Andrew Scott, the actor who plays the character, was spotted on the set. But is Moriarty really back from the dead or is this meant to depict something else?
The production of "Sherlock" Season 4 isn't even hiding the fact that Andrew Scott has been filming his scenes in the past days. In fact, photos and videos of Moriarty from a helicopter by the beach have been making the rounds on Twitter to prove that the character is back in action. Like previous location shoots on "Sherlock," it appears this set was also not restricted to the public.
Whether this means Moriarty is actually alive on "Sherlock" remains uncertain, however. While there have been plenty of rumors that Andrew Scott will still be part of "Sherlock" Season 4, his participation still remains a mystery.
Did the cast and crew film a flashback scene or a dream sequence for "Sherlock" with Moriarty? Will this scene be part of Sherlock tapping into his mind and imagination? Back in February, creator Steven Moffat did say that Andrew Scott "may or may not" be seen in the series when it returns, per Den of Geek.
Meanwhile, Wales Online reports that the location shoot with Andrew Scott happened at St. Catherine's Island where a Moriarty flag could be seen from afar. "Sherlock" star Benedict Cumberbatch and co-star Martin Freeman, who plays Watson, were not seen during the filming, but the production was reportedly in the location for several hours.
The news outlet also reports that "Sherlock" Season 4 is set to run in the last quarter of 2016, in time for the holidays. But earlier reports indicated the season could have a January 2017 airing as per usual. BBC has yet to make an official announcement regarding "Sherlock's" air date.
