Qualcomm is set to unveil its new Snapdragon processor that will power many of 2017's upcoming smartphones. Snapdragon 835, the successor to Snapdragon 820, promises greater efficiency and the capability to support features like virtual reality.
Snapdragon 835 promises improved performance, particularly in terms of battery consumption. The Verge reports that the processor can provide phones with 2 and a half hours' worth of more battery life as it consumes 25 percent less power than its predecessor, the 820. Compared to a much earlier version, Snapdragon 801, Snapdragon 835 consumes 50 percent less battery power.
One of the most exciting features of Snapdragon 835 is a component that allows for the speedy charging of phones. Qualcomm's new processor comes with Quick Charge 4.0, the new version of its fast charging technology that can power devices 20 percent quicker than the previous Quick Charge model.
According to Phone Arena, charging Snapdragon 835-powered phones for just five minutes will give them up to five hours of battery power. A full charge is enough to support voice calls for more than an entire day, streaming seven hours of 4K-resolution video, five hours of playing music, and three hours of capturing video in 4K.
Besides these, Snapdragon 835 is capable of running virtual and augmented reality apps, promising more colors and faster rendering of 3D graphics. To enhance users' VR experience, Snapdragon 835 also has better sound processing.
The new processor also improves smartphone cameras, allowing new phones to take images with much better quality than their predecessors. Snapdragon 835 supports optical zoom lens and has an enhanced capacity to stabilize electronic images.
Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors have dominated premium Android smartphones in recent years. This year, upcoming phones like the Samsung Galaxy S8, LG G6, and HTC 11 are reported to run on Snapdragon 835. Qualcomm has also announced plans to bring its processors to other devices apart from smartphones.
