The children at the Rainbow Child Care Center in Edgewood, a daycare center in northern Kentucky, were reportedly abused physically by one of the workers. The worker was charged with third-degree criminal abuse.
Fox 4 News reported a surveillance video showed the worker, identified as Anne Marie Ogonek of Erlanger, forcing children to the ground during the nap time of the children. She also appeared in the videos restraining toddlers in high chairs and making them undergo time out, which means children are removed from activity and forced to sit alone for a few minutes in order to calm down, for extended periods of time.
Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney's office noted the criminal complaint against Ogonek stated the different forms of abuse were reported in mid-September of last year. The report came after the parents of a 14-month-old accused Ogonek of forcing their son to the ground and covering his face with a blanket in an attempt to let the child sleep.
In the surveillance video, Ogonek was seen pinning the 14-month-old down using her body weight and her arms. The video also showed the child seemingly crying due to his body movements, Edgewood Detective Julie Marzheuser added. When the boy tried to move, Ogonek pulled the legs of the boy. The parents have since removed their son from the daycare center, Fox News reported.
Aside from the 14-month-old boy, the surveillance videos, which were reviewed for eight days, also showed how Ogonek was abusive towards the other toddlers. At one point, Ogonek was seen roughly grabbing and pulling the children by one arm or hand across the room and aggressively flipping the children on their mats via their arms and legs.
For the excessive amount of time being placed on time out, one incident involved a child being left alone for one hour and 10 minutes. Another form of abuse showed Ogonek leaving one child in a high chair for nearly one hour.
Ogonek was removed from her post at the daycare center. The daycare center released letters to the parents who continue to use their service and the company said they developed a Quality-Improvement Plan that will help them hire dedicated employees. Ogonek was set to be arraigned in Kenton County on Feb. 1.
