Malia Obama Attends Dakota Access Pipeline Protest During Sundance Festival

Former First Child Malia Obama attended a Dakota Access Pipeline protest at the Sundance Festival. The 18-year-old expressed her stance with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe.

Standing Rock Sioux tribe is the Native American Group that has been against the pipeline project. The confirmation that Obama was at the protest came from actress Shailene Woodley.

Independent reported Woodley was interviewed by Democracy Now and was asked if she was surprised to see Obama at the event. "It was amazing to see Malia," Woodley shared. "I saw her last night when we did the event with Chairman Dave Archambault and it was incredible to see her there."

Woodley continued to say she witnessed Obama as a human being and a woman coming into her own outside of her family and the attachments as a presidential child. The "Divergent" actress added Obama's willingness to participate in democracy is not attached to her last name and that her choice to be part of a movement is her way of saying if she did not, there will be no world for her future children.

The protest was done in Park City, Utah on Monday. The rest of the Obama family is at their Caribbean holiday and the eldest daughter of the former president left their vacation to attend the largest independent film festival in the United States, Yahoo reported.

The protest came after Donald Trump signed a presidential memorandum regarding the review and approval of the Dakota Access Pipeline project. The order came weeks after the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ordered a stop to the construction of the project pending further review.

Woodley was at the other actions prior to the Sundance Film Festival protest supporting the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The actress was arrested and it was all shown via a Facebook Live video.
