A New Jersey woman was found in her car Saturday who was unconscious after overdosing on heroin. Police also discovered her 3-month-old son crying in the backseat.
New York City police officials from Arden Heights in Staten Island said a team of responders found the mom inside a Hyundai Sonata with its machine running in a parking lot at around 8:30 p.m., Pix 11 reported. The site was in front of a bagel store and a pizzeria.
Two doses of Narcan and an anti-overdose spray were given to the woman, who nearly died from the heroin overdose. It was reported when she was found, she was no longer breathing but she was able to regain consciousness and admitted she was high on heroin.
New York Daily News reported the mother is 24-years-old and was identified as Katelyn Cox. She and her son were both taken to Staten Island University Hospital South to be treated.
Cox was charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated, driving while impaired on drugs and child endangerment. It was unclear where the father of the child was at that time police found her.
Late last month, a couple was also arrested after they were found unconscious while their two children, ages 5-month-old and 18-month-old were left in the backseat of their car.
The incident took place in Florida and a video showing them unconscious was uploaded online. The two were charged with child neglect.
Last year, a photo showing a couple and their 4-year-old son made rounds online. One of the responding officers decided to post the photo for it to be circulated in order to make people aware of the dangers of drug overdose.
There has been an increase in parents overdosing while their children are in the vehicle with them. Other reports about parents overdosing at their home were also reported.
