It is a given fact that having access to education is part of the civil rights of every man. Unfortunately, equal access to education remains a global issue but Latin artists including Enrique Iglesias, Thalia, Becky G, Carlos Vives, Chyno Miranda, Juan Luis Guerra, Jesse & Joy and Walshy Fire are pushing the importance of education as the "true keys to success."
Aside from the Latin stars, Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC), the organization who pioneered the introduction of RHMC/HACER scholarships in 1985, also talked about the significance of education in the Hispanic community. According to Billboard, the organization already awarded more than $31 million in scholarships to almost 18,000 students.
The publication also asked the Latin artists about how education played a role in their lives after the 2017 Billboard Latin Music Awards. The stars even admitted didn't just play a vital role in their stardom but together with preparedness and perseverance, it became a major factor in their successes.
"When I first started singing and songwriting I didn't even think of going to a university that just had to do with music," Iglesias, who funds a scholarship to Berklee College of Music, told Billboard. "At the time I was 17 or 18, I was starting my first year of college and it wasn't even on my radar. Now, I've worked with a lot of people that have gone to Berklee, including my friend and producer Carlos Paucar. My first question to Carlos was, was it worth it? And, would you do it all over again? And he said yes, 100 percent."
Thalia, on the other hand, said education and music education are two important tools that will save her children's lives. The proud mom-of-two said "in a world that moves at such a fast pace," it is important that "kids have all the tools available to them in terms of education."
As for Becky G, the 20-year-old "Sola" singer said she wished she developed a fondness on reading since she's an artist who constantly strives to tell a story through her music. She said reading could have made her find more inspiration.
In other related reports, education issues still persist in the United States. In fact, Neosho Daily News noted that the country's education outcomes are so poor but columnist Mike Davis said charter schools and vouchers are not the solutions.
Davis added making for-profit corporations as in charge of education will result in failure as it does not address the major problems in the U.S. educational system. Do you think education is important? Please sound off below.
