Qatar authorities have identified the parents of the abandoned newborn baby at the airport. The baby was the reason why last month, several women reported that they were searched invasively at the airport. The incident sparked anger among passengers at the airport.
The abandoned newborn baby
Last October 2, a newborn baby was found in a bathroom at Hamad International Airport. Reports disclosed that the baby was found either inside or beside a trashcan.
The baby is under the care of Qatar authorities.
The outrage during the initial investigation
Because of the invasive search, dozens of women felt that the procedure was unacceptable.
13 Australian women were subjected to the search. That caused outrage in Australia. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison even said that the invasive search was appalling and unacceptable.
Because of this, Qatar authorities issued an apology last October 28. Their statement said that they are apologizing for 'any distress or infringement on the personal freedom of any traveler.'
As part of the Qatar authorities' way of addressing the incident, the security staff who carried out the invasive searches have been charged. According to the statement of a Qatari prosecutor last Monday, the security personnel involved in the incident could be facing prison sentences of up to three years.
The mother's identity
Few weeks after the controversial incident, Qatar authorities were able to identify the mother of the abandoned newborn baby.
Although the name of the mother was not disclosed, the investigation identified the mother only as an "Asian nationality."
Authorities believe that after abandoning the baby in the airport, the mother boarded and departed out of Qatar.
The statement from the Qatari prosecutor did not disclose where the mother travelled.
The charges against the mother of the abandoned baby
The mother has left the country and has been charged with attempted murder. Because the parent of the child is not in Qatar, legal proceedings to arrest her has been launched by proper authorities.
If proven guilty, the mother of the infant could be dealing fifteen years of jail time.
The father of the abandoned newborn baby
Further investigation revealed that the father of the newborn baby is also of Asian nationality. The father and the mother of the infant are not married.
In Qatar, it is not rare for women to abandon their child if it is born out of marriage. That is to avoid imprisonment since sex out of marriage is considered as a criminal act in Qatar.
According to the father of the infant, the mother sent her a photo of their child after birth. The woman then said that "she (had) dumped the child and fled to her country."
