A mother of two children, who woke up looking like three months pregnant, underwent to a grueling 12-hour-operation to remove her massive one-stone tumor and her six organs.
Sandra Currie, 44 years old, from Dunfermline, Fife, said it was in February 2013 when she woke up and got scared after she noticed she looked like a pregnant woman. Hence, she was admitted to Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for hysterectomy. While in the hospital, doctors also found out that Sandra was suffering from pseudomyxoma peritonei (PMP), known as "one in a million" cancer.
Mrs. Currie, who is a digital marketing consultant told the Daily Record, "By Easter, it weighed over a stone. It was putting pressure on my lungs and I couldn't breathe or bend properly. It was so uncomfortable and very painful."
The doctors told Sandra that the prognosis wasn't good and she needed to go under the knife right away to save her life. However, there are only two hospitals in the U.K. that perform the said procedure. So, the worried mom traveled to Basingstoke in Hampshire.
In July 2014, Mrs. Currie underwent to the operation and had a pioneering HIPEC chemo wash treatment to kill any remaining cancer cells from her body. During the surgery, doctors also removed her gall bladder, spleen, appendix, womb, omentum and part of her diaphragm.
After the surgery, Sandra said it was the worst time she had ever felt in her whole life. "There was tubing everywhere and I had 60 staples in my stomach," she said.
But the brave mom was so determined to return to their family home for her kids and was back just less than two weeks after her operation. Now, the cancer-free mother is campaigning to get the same life-saving facilities in Scotland. "It's definitely worth it for the life you can get back," Mrs. Currie told Mail Online.
