Toddlers normally enjoy being naked at home. Rather than getting dressed, they like walking around the house with no clothes on. So, you might be wondering what's up with your little one? Why every time you dress your child and after a few minutes, he or she is naked again?
Reasons why kids prefer to be nude
Well, there are several reasons why toddlers love to take off their clothes. One reason is discomfort. Your child might be wearing something that may not feel so good against bare skin. So instead of telling you that they are not comfortable with their dress, they just take charge and remove their garments right away.
Taking their clothes off also means they just want to grab your attention. Parents sometimes overact or laugh at their kids when their child insists on going bare-butt. However, showing your kid some form of reaction can only send a message to them that they are winning. Hence, it will only encourage the same behavior.
In addition, shedding their clothes off could only mean they are showing off their newly acquired skill. Once your kid learns the skill of unzipping, unbuttoning and how to remove an arm from a sleeve, then expect he or she will most likely do it again and again even you're at the playground or at the supermarket.
What to do about it
When your child takes his or her clothes off don't scold, shame your kid or laugh. Just gently take your little one by hand and go into a room and ask your child to put on his or her clothes.
Moreover, according to Alyson Schafer, a psychotherapist and author of "Ain't Misbehavin': Tactics for Tantrums, Meltdowns, Bedtime Blues and Other Perfectly Normal Kid Behaviors," parents should teach their kids about public and private behavior. For one, they can explain to their kids, "Your body is private, so if you're not at home with Mom and Dad, you have to keep your clothes on."
