Back in 2010, Angelina Jolie starred in a spy thriller alongside Liev Schreiber. Now, six years later, "Salt" is the latest movie to get its own TV series adaptation.
According to The Wrap, Sony Pictures Entertainment will be developing the TV show. The company is currently "selling it to buyers and co-production partners at the European Film Market at the Berlin Film Festival."
With that being said, U.S. viewers looking forward to watching the show are in for a huge disappointment. As it turns out, Sony Pictures is planning to bring the upcoming "Salt" series to Europe, instead of the United States.
Apparently, the move seems to be part of bigger strategy for the production company. "Sony Pictures Entertainment executive Diego Suarez has been tasked with increasing the amount of programming outside of the U.S," wrote Laura Hurley of Cinema Blend.
She continued, "Considering that 'Salt' was a huge hit overseas, pulling in $175 million, this adaptation may be the perfect project for Sony to gain a significant foothold in European television markets."
Directed by Phillip Noyce, the original film focused on CIA agent Evelyn Salt, played by Angelina Jolie, who was released from a prison camp in North Korea but later turned out to be a Russian double-agent.
The "Salt" TV adaptation is still in its early stages, reports ScreenDaily, which basically means there hasn't been any news regarding the cast yet. It's unlikely that a Hollywood movie star such as Angelina Jolie would be signing on for the series.
The uncertainty of casting leaves plenty of room for speculation on the gender of the series' titular character. As a matter of fact, the original lead role was supposed to be for a man, a role that was written for Tom Cruise as Edwin Salt.
