Former basketball star Ray Allen of the Miami Heat announced on Feb. 18 his new venture as an organic fast food restaurant owner called "Grown." His store will officially open this March located at 8211 S. Dixie Hwy in South Miami.
In a news report posted by the Miami Herald, they wrote that Allen's son, Walker, made him and his wife pursue this healthy dining business. His 9-year-old son is battling from Type 1 diabetes and the idea of owning an organic fast food restaurant couldn't be "more perfect" for his condition. His wife, Shannon, conceptualized this idea since nutritious food is definitely hard to find, especially for the case of their child.
"I had an aha moment where I realized I couldn't sit around helpless waiting for someone else to create a fast-food option that met our family's dietary needs, and as we did our research it became obvious that this wasn't a struggle unique to us, families everywhere are looking for convenience without compromise," Shannon shared to the publication.
The former shooting guard for Miami Heat said their place is not what everyone would expect as a usual fast food. "When 'Grown' opens, it will be very much a concept unlike anything else designed to be accessible by everyone -- from the weekend warrior to the soccer mom and anyone in between."
This is not the first time that the couple was involved in the food industry since the two of them are both creators and executive producers of a cooking show called "The Pre-Game Meal" via Comcast SportsNet. And for their current venture in the food industry, they worked with a group of nutrition experts to help them arrange the details of their healthy restaurant.
Miami New Times reported that their organic restaurant will have an open-kitchen concept and the price of their meals would range from $4 to $18 per plate.
