Commissioner James Gordon is one of the most beloved characters in the DC Comics universe. Many fans felt ecstatic when J.K. Simmons was announced to play Batman's trusted ally in "Justice League: Part One." But what does the Academy Award-winning actor think about the other actors who have portrayed the comic book character?
"Obviously, a lot of really wonderful actors have played that character previously, and most of them I saw at the time the movies came out, never imagining that I would be doing the same thing," J.K. Simmons told Collider. "So, I can't say that I don't have some impression of that character in my head that's based on what I saw, but I'm not planning on going back and watching any of the other films."
The character of Commissioner James Gordon has been played by actors Pat Hingle in Tim Burton's "Batman," Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, Neil Hamilton in Adam West 1960's "Batman" TV series and Ben McKenzie in Fox' series "Gotham," according to Entertainment Weekly. J.K. Simmons noted that he will be learning more about Gordon through the comic books and not from the portrayals of other actors.
The "Whiplash" actor also commented on the difference of his Commissioner James Gordon from the other versions of the character from the past. J.K. Simmons explained that his Gordon in "Justice League: Part One" is a stronger and more impactful character than before.
Aside from J.K. Simmons as Commissioner James Gordon, "Justice League: Part One" has assembled other heavy hitters from the DC universe. Ben Affleck will reprise his role as Batman, Henry Cavill will portray Superman for the third time, Wonder Woman will be played once again by Gal Gadot, with Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg and Ezra Miller as The Flash, Cinema Blend reports. The superhero ensemble movie is set to be released in November 2017.
