GoPro Omni Price, Specs, Release News & Update: New VR Kit Up For Pre-Orders As 360-Degree Platform Launches

As virtual reality is becoming mainstream, GoPro announced Monday that it has opened pre-orders for GoPro Omni, its new virtual reality camera. The company also launched its new 360-degree platform to boost Omni's specs, features and usage.

GoPro Omni is composed of six GoPro Hero4 that can be used simultaneously to take photos and videos. The device is mounted in a special rig and it's controlled using a remote. Because of the way it is built and designed, users will be able to take 360-degree shots with ease.

Then, they can upload and share their work at GoPro's virtual reality platform. The new platform is similar to Kolor Eyes, which was being used as GoPro's platform for uploading "spherical content" in recent months.

The company acquired this from French virtual reality hub Kolor in a buyout deal last year. The VR site can be viewed better using VR headsets.

GoPro Omni will sell for $5,000 and pre-orders have opened up via the company's official site. However, there is no official word yet on when the devices will be shipped out.

While GoPro's competing companies are also selling virtual reality cameras for a cheaper price, the quality of a GoPro devices remain unmatched and have proven to be more advantageous for enthusiasts, per The Verge. This is not the first time GoPro has released a virtual camera, though. In 2015, it came out with GoPro Odyssey, which is a massive 16-camera rig.

The product is limitedly available and cost $15,000. However, the company is expected to introduce and improve on the Odyssey in its future plans, per Huffington Post.
