Chris Brown and ex-girlfriend Rihanna had a highly publicized pre-Grammy incident in 2009 after the "Loyal" singer physically attacked the "Diamonds" artist. Chris Brown revealed in his "Welcome To My Life" documentary that he almost committed suicide after hurting Rihanna.
BBC recalls that Chris Brown was given a five-year probation after injuring Rihanna. Chris Brown finally completed the sentence and saw the case close last year.
Chris Brown described ordeal after his attack on Rihanna as a complete turning of hi world upside down. "I went from being on top of the world, number one songs and kind of being like America's sweetheart to being public enemy number one," Brown said.
Rihanna did not abandon Chris Brown and got back together with the "Don't Judge Me" singer, who also happened to be the "Umbrella" singer's first love and only official relationship for a long time. In a Vanity Fair interview, Rihanna described feeling protective toward Chris Brown. Rihanna related how she felt she might a guardian angel to Chris Brown.
"Maybe I'm the person who's almost the guardian angel to this person, to be there when they're not strong enough, when they're not understanding the world," Rihanna shared. "[...] When they just need someone to encourage them in a positive way and say the right thing."
Rihanna eventually realized that she had to walk away from Chris Brown. The singer clarifies that although she and Chris Brown are not friends, neither is Rihanna enemies with the "Say Goodbye" singer.
BBC reports that Chris Brown spoke about his relationship with Rihanna seeming like a fantasy. When they ended, Chris Brown said that he felt like a monster.
After his assault on Rihanna became public, Chris Brown said he messed up his success. According to Chris Brown, he was mostly getting high and barely ate or slept. Chris Brown's mother, Joyce Hawkins, said that because Chris Brown rose to fame so quickly, he did not have a normal life.
The "No Air" singer did experience a normal childhood and did not have the life of a normal teenager. Joyce Hawkins believes that these may have contributed to a lot of the problems Chris Brown eventually experienced.
