CBS has finally made it official and "Supergirl" Season 2 is pushing on. However, the show will be moving to The CW and the cast and crew will also be moving to Vancouver when filming begins. What will these changes mean for the series and will another crossover with "The Flash" take place?
Fans have been waiting for confirmation on the fate of "Supergirl" as the idea of cancelling the series after its first-year run had been looming due to falling ratings. Parent Herald previously reported that CBS and The CW have been in discussion about the potential move and the deal has been sealed May 12.
'Supergirl Season 2' Joining 'The Flash' And 'Arrow'
CBS' expectations for "Supergirl" fell short as the show's ratings didn't live up to the projections. Renewing "Supergirl" for Season 2 on The CW could give it a better chance to find an audience especially since The CW is already home to DC Comics stories like "The Flash" and "Arrow."
"Supergirl" will feel right at home on The CW and it will be able to target the right audience. There's also a potential for more crossovers with the other DC shows. An encounter with "The Flash" in future episodes is not far-fetched.
'Supergirl Season 2' Budget Cuts
Entertainment Weekly reports that production cost for "Supergirl" Season 2 will be cut down due to the move from CBS to The CW. This is the reason why the show is shifting its filming location from Los Angeles to Vancouver, Canada since it will be less expensive to produce the series there. Most of The CW shows are already on location in Vancouver, including "The Flash."
"Supergirl" Season 1 apparently operated with a $3 million budget per episode due to licensing cost. CBS has also been losing money over this as the show struggled to find its niche audience. "Supergirl" started out strong in the ratings and was the number one new TV show on CBS, but its numbers dropped week after week. However, its numbers also leaned towards the younger audience and its ratings peaked during the crossover episode with "The Flash."
